It was a great day for Wealdstone last Wednesday when the club were honoured with three awards at the prestigious National Game Awards , held at Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge ground.
In an event traditionally dominated by much bigger clubs, mainly from the full-time professionals of the Blue Square Premier, Wealdstone was honoured with three awards following a memorable season when they reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy, just missing out on a trip to Wembley Stadium, and entering the Ryman Premier play-offs after a great run in the final weeks of the season. As well as fantastic all round team performances, striker Richard Jolly hit the headlines with his amazing 48 goal tally and this feat was duly recognised.
Richard Jolly won the TOFFS Step 3 player of the Year and the PRO DIRECT Golden Boot Award, whilst Wealdstone Manager Gordon Bartlett was awarded the POWER HORSE Lifetime Achievement Award recognising his incredible 27 years of management in non league. In his acceptance speech Gordon thanked his assistant manager Leo Morris for the part that he has played in a hugely successful partnership for 26 of the 27 years.
Richard Jolly chose the occasion to announce his retirement from the game – but only after another season at Wealdstone to round off a great career. Gordon Bartlett said: ‘This came as no surprise as we have fully discussed the position with Jolls. He dealt with a difficult period in his life a year ago and has come back with an amazing season, including completing the marathon and scoring 48 goals which has been an important part of our success this campaign. Richard has had some extremely attractive offers to lure him away from us already this close season but he has chosen to stay with us – a club that he calls his home. He is getting married in January and with his work career he now has to think about his future away from football but he is determined to go out on a high – as he always planned to,at Wealdstone’.
The club wishes to thank all supporters that voted for the NGA awards this year.
